- Indignation ran high at Jim Taylor's hotel. Gene Bardwell had just received a letter from his father, who not only refused consent to his son's marriage with Jim's daughter. Josie, but wound up by calling that young lady a "Western Miss Nobody" and added that he might be expected on the first train. The last sentence gave Gene hope, if Dad once met Josie, the young man felt quite confident all objections would be instantly removed. In this, however, he was doomed to disappointment. Mr. Hardwell absolutely refused to see Gene's fiancée, so there was nothing left to do but carry out the program they had planned in case all else failed. Accordingly, when the old gentleman started for home, Josie rode with the boys as far as the stage station, then, while they hurried away to mask and make ready for the mock hold-up, the girl remained to await the coming of her future father-in-law. As the old coach came lumbering up, Josie, traveling bag in hand, hastened out to be very affably greeted by Mr. Hardwell, who, as the boys had carefully arranged, was the only passenger. Josie made the most of her opportunity as the stage wound its way over the hills, so that they had become fairly well acquainted when the boys dashed up, and at the point of their guns boldly demanded that the two passengers alight and with hands up march into the woods. Here they were securely bound to a tree, and a note, which Eagle Jack rode forward to take, was thrust into Mr. Hardwell's face, demanding $50,000 of his son if he wished to again behold his father alive. Then, after much shooting in the air, quarreling and yelling, the boys threw themselves upon the grass to sleep off the effects of a large black bottle, which, sad but true, had really been empty. At this point, the leader, on the pretext of forcing Josie to drink, turned so that she could conveniently get his knife, and afterwards as conveniently lay down with the rest. Quickly the girl cut herself and her fellow prisoner free; then, to the great admiration and astonishment of Mr. Hardwell, stealthily relieved each man of his gun, brought them blinkingly to their feet with a shot, and. lining them around the tree, forced the leader to bind them and himself to depart, while she helped her companion aboard a horse, mounted her own and made good their escape. As they disappeared from view, the boys dropped the rope, tucked up their guns and shouted for joy, but, could they have seen Hardwell clinging to the neck of his horse as Josie forced him to keep up with hers, and his terrified face at her driving, even after they had changed for a buckboard at the stage station, they would have yelled even louder. However, the finest part of it all was that they had accomplished their purpose. Mr. Hardwell's gratitude and admiration knew no bounds, and, when he discovered that this was the girl of his son's choice, he not only gave his consent but a very substantial check as well.

- The Lares and Penates of any crook are not happy or trustworthy gods at their best, but those that presided over the destinies of Buck Malley and Spider Burke the day they sought to hold up the careless and wealthy Mr. Shaugnessy must have had a particular grouch on or been assailed by soporific enemies of especial strength. Certain it is however, that no crooks ever found themselves tangled up in a more unhappy situation than did they in this holdup. Buck started the ball rolling. He say Shaugnessy with a bundle of money headed for a long walk and followed him with intent to get that money when a suitable location for his assault was reached. He cross countried on Shaugnessy and took refuge behind a tree. Almost at the same moment the Spider spied the promising pedestrian and slipped behind another tree nearer the approaching victim. It was a laugh for Buck when he saw this. He waited till Spider had relieved Mr. Shaugnessy of his wealth and then turned his artillery on the astounded crook. In vain the latter pleaded that they divide the spoils. Buck forced him to yield his gun and the Shaugnessy valuables, but so intent were they on their own affairs they forgot about the victim of the holdup. He saw what was transpiring, turned, slipped behind a line of bushes, from which he emerged to hit Buck over the head, seize the revolver and turn the tables on both crooks. Shaugnessy had an entertaining story to tell that night to a crowd of listeners at his favorite club, but Buck and Spider had anything but pleasant thoughts or words of commendation for their defending gods as they tossed on hard cots in their cells and the manner in which Spider expressed his regard for Buck would have been worthy addition to any sea captain's working vocabulary.
